LLM Traffic Study: AI Assistants Send Us 34x More Traffic Than Google

⚡ Key Finding (June 2026)

Across our site’s entire lifetime (October 2025 through June 2026), AI assistants sent 507 referral sessions while Google organic search sent 15 — a 34× gap. ChatGPT alone accounts for 476 of those sessions, which is 94% of all AI-assistant traffic and 32× what Google delivered. Even Bing organic beat Google by 6×. This page is our ongoing first-party dataset, updated monthly.

We run a SaaS review site that published 215 articles in 8 months. When we started, the plan was the classic one: publish comparison content, rank on Google, earn affiliate commissions. The traffic that actually showed up came from somewhere else entirely. This study documents what our analytics recorded, month by month, with the methodology open so you can check the math or replicate the measurement on your own site.

This page contains no affiliate links and no calls to action. It exists because we kept looking for first-party data on AI-assistant referral traffic and mostly found vendor marketing. The numbers below are our own GA4 records, and the limitations section explains exactly what they can and cannot prove.

The headline numbers

Lifetime referral sessions Oct 2025 to Jun 2026: AI assistants 507, Bing organic 94, Google organic 15. AI assistants sent 34x more sessions than Google organic.
  • 507 sessions from AI assistants (ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Perplexity) between October 1, 2025 and June 11, 2026
  • 15 sessions from Google organic search in the same window — a 34× gap in favor of AI assistants
  • 94 sessions from Bing organic — Bing outperformed Google 6× on the same content
  • ChatGPT alone delivered 476 sessions — 94% of all AI-assistant traffic, and 32× Google’s total
  • In our peak month (April 2026), AI assistants sent 202 sessions; Google organic sent 1

Month-by-month trend

Monthly sessions Nov 2025 to Jun 2026: AI assistant referrals peaked at 202 in April 2026 while Google organic never exceeded 8 in any month.
Month AI assistants Google organic Bing organic Total sessions (all sources)
Nov 2025 6 1 10 80
Dec 2025 22 4 16 190
Jan 2026 20 0 6 96
Feb 2026 10 1 3 94
Mar 2026 11 0 9 99
Apr 2026 202 1 14 605
May 2026 163 0 23 1,530
Jun 2026 (through Jun 11) 73 8 13 813

The April 2026 inflection wasn’t gradual. One of our posts started getting cited by ChatGPT in answers about free text-to-speech tools, and AI-assistant referrals jumped 18× month-over-month. Google organic stayed flat at zero-to-one sessions per month throughout. May’s total-session spike includes a newsletter send and direct traffic; the AI-vs-search comparison columns are unaffected.

Which AI assistants send the traffic

Source Lifetime sessions Share of AI-assistant traffic
chatgpt.com 476 94.0%
copilot.com 19 3.8%
claude.ai 6 1.2%
copilot.microsoft.com 3 0.6%
perplexity.ai 2 0.4%

ChatGPT’s dominance here mirrors its consumer market share, but the skew is starker than usage stats would predict. One explanation: ChatGPT’s web-browsing answers include clickable source citations prominently, while some competitors summarize without surfacing links as visibly. We can only measure what arrives with a referrer header — more on that limitation below.

Two patterns stand out. First, every page on this list is a listicle-style roundup with a comparison table — not a single-product review. Our single-product reviews, which make up roughly half the site, barely register in AI referrals. Second, the #2 most-cited page is our review of ChatGPT’s own pricing. ChatGPT cites third-party coverage of itself when users ask what it costs.

Why we think this is happening

Our site is 8 months old with a domain authority of 3 and almost no backlinks. Google’s crawl scheduler rations indexation for sites like ours: as of June 2026, Google Search Console shows roughly three-quarters of our published posts sitting in “Discovered — currently not crawled” status. Google knows the URLs exist and has chosen not to spend crawl budget on them. That’s a rational allocation on Google’s part — we’re an unproven domain in a crowded niche.

AI assistants apparently allocate citations differently. ChatGPT’s browsing layer retrieves and cites pages that answer the question cleanly — year-stamped roundups with comparison tables and direct answers — without weighting domain authority the way Google’s ranking systems do. The result is a window where a small site with genuinely useful comparison content can earn AI citations it could never earn as Google rankings. We don’t know how long that window stays open.

Limitations — read before citing

  • These numbers undercount AI traffic. GA4 only attributes a session to chatgpt.com when the referrer header survives. Clicks from ChatGPT’s mobile apps and some in-product surfaces arrive with no referrer and land in Direct. Our Direct bucket (2,602 lifetime sessions) plausibly contains additional AI-assistant traffic we cannot attribute.
  • We are a small site. 3,508 lifetime sessions total. The ratios are the story here, not the absolute volumes. A site with strong Google rankings would show a very different mix.
  • The Google comparison is partly self-inflicted. Our near-zero Google traffic reflects our domain’s age and authority, not just Google’s declining referral generosity. The honest framing: for a new site without backlinks, AI citations are reachable; Google rankings are not.
  • Sessions, not users or revenue. One person can generate multiple sessions. We do also have affiliate-signup conversions attributable to AI-referred sessions, but the sample is too small to publish conversion rates responsibly yet.

Methodology

Data source: our Google Analytics 4 property, queried via the GA4 Data API. Metric: sessions, dimensioned by sessionSource and sessionMedium, October 1, 2025 through June 11, 2026. “AI assistants” = sessions whose source matches chatgpt.com, copilot.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, bard.google.com, you.com, poe.com, groq.com, or kagi.com. “Google organic” = source containing google with medium organic, which excludes Google referral and paid traffic. Bing equivalent for Bing. No sampling — session counts at this volume are exact. The site runs on WordPress.com; analytics fire on all page loads including mobile.

We update this page monthly with the new month’s row.

Frequently asked questions

Does this mean SEO is dead?

No. It means the on-ramp has changed for new sites. Established domains with authority still earn large Google traffic. What our data shows is that a new site without backlinks can earn AI-assistant citations long before it can earn Google rankings — the citation path and the ranking path have different entry requirements.

What content earns AI citations?

In our data, exclusively listicle-style roundups with comparison tables, year-stamped titles, and direct answers near the top of the page. Our single-product reviews, roughly half the site, earn almost no AI referrals. The top-cited page (free text-to-speech tools) accounts for 250 of our 507 AI sessions.

How do you know the traffic comes from ChatGPT?

The session arrives with chatgpt.com as the referrer in GA4. This is conservative: clicks from ChatGPT surfaces that strip the referrer land in our Direct bucket and are not counted as AI traffic. The 507 figure is a floor, not a ceiling.
